Finding Aids

The staff of the South Carolina Room have created several Finding Aids to assist the public in understanding and utilizing the materials within our collection, especially microfilmed sets of primary documents such as probate or land records. For sources on specific research topics, please see the Research Guides page. The Finding Aids are in PDF format and require Adobe Reader to view.

Charleston County Plat Books — This microfilm series features plats of properties in the city of Charleston and outlying areas of Charleston County.

Revolutionary War Rolls — The index for this set covers military units for all colonies involved in the Revolutionary War; however, the South Carolina Room only has the actual records pertaining to South Carolina in their microfilm collections.

Letters of Guardianship — This set of film contains legal proceedings dealing with minor beneficiaries who are named in Charleston County Will records and includes letters from 1783 to 1827. Also included in the set is a “Miscellaneous Records” roll which contains Court of the Ordinary Records from 1783 to 1812, and a “Receipts” collection of Court of the Ordinary listings from 1853 to 1870.

Magnolia Cemetery Records — Magnolia is large cemetery located just outside the City of Charleston. It has served the area since 1836 and is still in operation today. The microfilm collection consists of “Index of Burials, 1838 to 1978”, “Interments, 1838-1908 and 1937-1979”, and “Records of Burials, 1836-1931.”

We have also created several map indexes to make our uncataloged collections more accessible. The maps are broken down into sub-sections, including Charleston city, Charleston County, South Carolina and the Southeastern region, and miscellaneous, with maps of the harbor and other topics. There is a separate index for each of these collections, which are available here as keyword searchable PDF files.
