Charleston County Plat Books A-F

The Charleston County Plat Books were filmed by the Register of Mense Conveyances (RMC Office). The plats include properties in both the City of Charleston and outlying areas that fall within Charleston County. Many plats date from the late 1800s through the 1930s and include areas of West Ashley, James Island, and North Charleston that were developed during this time frame such as Stono Park, Edgewater Park, Wappoo Heights, Park Circle, and Chicora Park among other areas.

The first roll of film includes an alphabetical index, which lists street names, creeks and rivers, places, and individuals who are referenced in the plat. The indexes also include the date, description, plat book, and page. The indexes are organized as follows: A-L, undated to 1880; M-Z, undated to 1880; and A-Z, 1881 – (no end date stated). Please note that the index includes listings for plat books A-Z, but only books A through F are in the library’s collection. A sample of the index is provided at the end of this finding aid.

The plats are usually numbered at the top right or left-hand corner of the first page. Because many of the plats are so large, they were filmed in sections that can be copied and pieced back together. Due to the poor quality of the film, some of the page numbers are no longer visible. The plats were filmed in order, so plats can still be located even if the numbers are not visible on each plat. Please take care to proceed slowly while searching the poor quality portions of the film. The rolls include the following information:

These plats do not appear to be indexed on the South Carolina Department of Archives and History Online Index, although other plats in the McCrady series for Charleston County are indexed online and available in the SC Room on film.

The RMC is in the process of digitizing their plat collection. They appear to have completed some of these Plat Books. To access the plats that are available online, visit the RMC Archive website. Some plats in this collection can be found with the Pre-1900’s Plats. The original Plat Books are also available at the Charleston County RMC Office. Please contact the RMC Office for more information on viewing their plat collections in person.
